Cedar Falls, Iowa

Make your plans now to join your colleagues and friends at the 2004 IAHPERD State Convention. You can register now. The tentative schedule in .pdf format is now available for download. The University of Northern Iowa will again host the fall convention, which promises to have sessions of interest to match everyone’s interests and tastes. Some featured sessions include:

The Educational Disc Golf Experience (EDGE) will share a multi-Disciplinary 3-12 grade curriculum. Jay and Des Reading, world champion Disc golf players, will demonstrate disc golf concepts, equipment and benefits that Disc Golf can bring to your school wellness program.

World-renowned basketball handler and clinician, Sandy, “Spin” Slade will present basketball skills in a way that is non-competitive, differentiates according to abilities and is a whole lot of fun! Sandy will introduce the revolutionary game, “Basketball Skillastics” and many other basketball activities guaranteed to make your program a success.

Karen Roesler, past national secondary physical education teacher of the year, and Lois Mauch, past Central District Elementary physical education teacher of the year, will share fitness and assessment activities that are effective and time efficient. Their sessions will provide the participants with many practical, active and fun activities that can be easily infused into your curriculum. Come participate in their “Fitness Fest”.

Kathleen Janz, associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Iowa, will deliver a keynote address entitled, “Playful to the Bone: New Insights on Movement and Bone Development in Iowa’s Children”. This keynote will focus on the health aspects of physical activity and fitness during childhood and adolescence of Iowa students.

Judy Young, Vice- President for Programs for AAHPERD will share national insights pertaining to physical education and health in the No Child Left Behind era. Dr. Young’s keynote address will provide the foundation for establishing effective advocacy strategies for our programs.  It is a real honor to have someone of Judy’s abilities join us from AAHPERD’s national office.

Lois Boeyink, the 2004 National Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year, will share her philosophy, ideas and activities that resulted in her being named the top national elementary specialist for this year. In another session Lois and John Baker will share information and material they received at the National Forum on No Child Left Behind that was held in Virginia.

Deb Stephenson, Iowa’s Health Educator of the Year and Bev Ahern, Iowa’s Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year will also be sharing their ideas and expertise during individual sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

There will also be two special “strands” of sessions that will focus on specific areas. One strand will respond to the state’s requirement that curriculum must be based on research supported evidence. These “research-based” sessions will emphasize the application of research data into the physical education curriculum and the teaching environment. The Research Into Practice sessions will provide the participants with data supported curriculum content and techniques in such areas as exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, sport psychology and pedagogy. Learn what the research data suggests are the most appropriate activities to do in the gym.

The second “strand” will be a series of sessions pertaining to teacher education and development. These sessions will be directed to those individuals working with students at the collegiate level. National and state level information will be provided. Dr. Judy Young will also share her insights as to national trends and issues in health and physical education teacher education.
