It is that time again – time for learning, sharing, and fun – state convention time.

The convention theme is “Be The One, Make A Difference”.  As I said in my president’s message, you all do that everyday, but I want to highlight how important it is for each person to make a difference because the collective whole can make such a difference in our colleagues, our children, communities, the entire state of Iowa, and us.   I think the programs at the 2005 IAHPERD Convention will help you make even more of a difference.  The IAHPERD conference will begin on Saturday, November 5, 8:00 am with an all convention ice-breaker.  Sessions begin at 9:00 with the keynote address at 11:00 am.  On Sunday there will be a box luncheon at Noon to announce election results, pass the gavel, and conclude (some cool door prizes), but the plan is to have everyone on their way home by 1:00.

The Keynote Speaker, Ruthie Bushnell, is addressing an issue that is at the forefront everyday.  Her keynote address will be Health on the Move: Using Exercise to Teach Children Health and Nutrition.  Ruthie is an energetic, dynamic person with a passion that is contagious.  You will leave this session fired up and ready to go make a difference.  Her presentation will demonstrate how health and nutrition concepts are taught while students are moving and learning the importance of exercising and motor skills.  Ruthie will also be doing an elementary and secondary session on Saturday afternoon and repeating the sessions on Sunday morning so everyone can get to one of them.  The general session will be Saturday, November 5, 11:00 am, please plan on attending.  Following the Keynote address, representatives from Iowa and Nebraska AAHPERDS will be informing you and inviting you to the exciting joint conference in 2006.

The vice-presidents, legislative council members, my dynamic duo co-chairs, Mary O’Brien-Orman and Kathy Courtney, and myself have been putting together a convention that we think will be awesome.  In planning session we have tried to target areas of interest and highlight Teachers of the Year and PEP Grant Winners.

Ann Griffins, National Adapted Physical Education Teachers of the year, Cindy Herndon, National College and University Dance Teacher of the Year, Jan Grenko-Lehman, Iowa Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and Mary O’brien-Orman, Iowa Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year will all be featured speakers.

Topics of interest that the convention will target include: technology: use of heart rate monitor for accountability and information and reports generated, Pocket PC - PE Manager, as an assessment tool; gravionics, Tri-fit Evaluation (find out where you stand); PEP Grant – what they did to get it and what they are doing now; Exhibitor Sessions including bowling, touckque ball, Frisbee golf; Strength and Conditioning based on the University of Iowa Strength Coach’s Program; several dance activity programs (you will be dancingJ) , and Iowa Dairy Council, Team Nutrition, and other grant programs available for physical educators.  A Geocaching session where you will actually use GPS systems to find hidden treasure around Ottumwa will be a highlight.  Julie Hicks, a first year teacher at the Andre Aggasi Prepatory Academy will be presenting life as a first year teacher and Bob Nutgrass will be doing a future professional session. Several health sessions are in the works and I am in the process of getting Kathy Thomas to talk about the School Health Policy Action Plan for Health 2006.

The Iowa Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance is planning on recognizing the efforts of Senator Tom Harkin at the Awards dinner on Saturday night.  Senator Harkin has been instrumental in obtaining the PEP funds, working with the fruits and vegetable snack program in the schools and now with his new initiative: Healthy Lifestyles and Prevention (HeLP) America Act of 2004.  I am still waiting for confirmation, but I am confident we will have the opportunity to thank him for all his efforts and hear about his passion for healthy, active people. Saturday night the awards dinner will begin at 6:00 pm.  Following the awards, the presentation to Senator Harkin and his speech, there will be a dance.  The plan is to do some mixer dances first which should be a lot of fun.  Bingo will be played to determine door prizes and we have some good ones.

Registration will be $60.  Presenters will get free registration for the day of their presentation.  They must register for a one day registration.  Note that registration fees are due by October 20, 2005 to ensure meals.

Anyone that has been to a convention knows the energy that is created by a group of like people, with a like goal, that like to be active.  The feeling is contagious and I invite you to come along and catch the feeling at the 2005 IAHPERD Convention in Ottumwa, Iowa, November 5-6, 2005.  I can’t wait to see you in Ottumwa.
