Joyce Tiarks is an elementary physical education teacher in Underwood, Iowa for 30 years. She is committed to her P.E. program and has a strong understanding of the developmental levels of children. Her class time is set up to meet the needs of all students in her classes. She is very detailed oriented—every minute is planned so that students get the most out of their P.E. program. Joyce conducts her classes in a positive and respectful manner so that everyone succeeds. She is an outstanding individual that has so much compassion and understanding for each student. Joyce epitomizes a positive role model in terms of fitness and sensitivity to the needs of all students. Year after year she enhances her physical education program keeping in mind the skills children need to know and learn to lead a healthy fit lifestyle. Joyce approaches everything with energy and enthusiasm. Her work ethic makes everyone around her want to work harder. It would not matter what Joyce taught, she would do it right. Joyce is one of those rare teachers who could teach anything. She would research and work at it until she had it right. Joyce has coordinated the school wide Jump Rope for Heart Event with overwhelming success for many years. She also coaches athletics earning the title of “Coach of the Year,”…later she was names a finalist for the National Softball Coach of the Year Award.
