REQUIRED: QUALITY, DAILY
PHYSICAL EDUCATION

OBJECTIVES
Physical activity performed with the proper duration, frequency and intensity can:
  • promote sensory stimulation for optimal growth and development and early cognitive function
  • assist in perceptual and cognitive development
  • improve the functioning of the central nervous, skeletal, muscular, cardio-vascular and metabolic systems of the body
  • enhance self-concept, self-esteem and social competence
  • improve psycho-social functions
  • prevent the onset of some diseases and delay the negative effects of aging
All students, including those participating in athletics and other co-curricular activities, need to be involved daily each school year in the instructional phase of the program. Students need access to resource materials and facilities for physical education which will benefit individual growth as well as stimulate continued interest in regular physical activity. The program should be adapted for those students who have special needs. These students should be included, when feasible, in the regular program.

PROGRAM DESIGN
A quality program should be designed and taught by competent and certified physical education specialists. The program should clearly identify objectives by grade level for appropriate physical activity which will develop fitness and motor skills, knowledge and understanding, appropriate social awareness and behavior, and value of a healthy lifestyle. Learning activities should be sequenced by objectives, instructional strategies and standards of achievement in and through the grade levels K-12. Students in grades 1-5 should be engaged in physical education daily for at least 30 minutes and students in grades 6-12 for at least 50 minutes. Students should be physically active in at least 50 percent of school physical education class time. The program should provide evidence of its effectiveness through the assessment of specified outcomes at every grade level through the use of appropriate, valid and reliable measurements.

STUDENT GOALS
Students should become physically educated so that they:

  • learn skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities
  • are physically fit
  • participate regularly in physical activity
  • know the implications of and benefits from involvement in physical activities
  • value physical activity and its contributions to a healthful lifestyle
CLASS TIME
Philosophical and financial support in each school district is needed to provide sufficient instructional time, space and equipment to make quality, daily physical education a reality in every school. The class time for student achievement of the desired outcomes needs to include:
  • vigorous physical activity
  • diagnosing and learning of neuro-muscular skills
  • information about physical activity and fitness
  • time to enjoy the use of skills and knowledge
