Your Pitcher for the IAHPERD Team is Jean Blaydes
Madigan – From
Richardson, Texas! 25+ years of teaching elementary physical education.
Bachelor’s Degree from SMU and Masters Degree of Education, Kinesiology
from ETSU. Texas elementary PE teacher of the year in 1992. One of six
National Elementary PE teachers of the year in 1993. Texas AHPERD Honor
award 1997, Texas AHPERD Media Award in 1998. Presenter, keynote speaker
and workshop facilitator on the subjects of brain theory supporting movement’s
link to learning by teaching academics subjects kinesthetically. Presented
workshops internationally in 6 countries, National presentations have
been in 46 of 50 states. Curriculum writer for Eric Jensen CD Library,
Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research Voyager Program; Richardson ISD
PE curriculum; Humble ISD PE curriculum, North Carolina Redesign curriculum
project facilitator. Author or Thinking on Your Feet: A Year’s
Worth of Lesson Plans. Creator of the SMART KIDS LAB. See Jean in several
presentations and our Sunday Keynote Speaker.
Your Catcher for the IAHPERD Team is AAHPERD President, Steve Cone --
Dr. Stephen Cone received his Ph. D. from Texas A & M University
and is currently a Professor in the Health and Exercise Science Dept
at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. As an educator in the Teacher
Certification specialization, he teachers such courses as Fundamental
Movement, Motor Learning, and Technology and Assessment. He has presented
workshops and lectures at the international, national, regional and state
levels on Children’s Dance, Creative Movement, Interdisciplinary
Education, Leadership and Administrations and Physical Education. He
has written the book, Interdisciplinary Teaching Through Physical Education
(1998), and is currently writing the second edition of Teaching Children
Dance with his wife, Dr. Theresa Purcell Cone. In 2000, he was honored
as one of 40 charter Fellows in North American Society of Health, Physical
Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance Professionals. Look for Steve’s

At First Base for the IAHPERD Team is Elaine
Lindsay -- From Phoenix,
MD, The1996 NASPE National Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the
Year. MAHPERD Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 1995.
M.L.A, Western Maryland College, Westminster, MD. Experience in teaching
all grades and courses in high school Health and Physical Education Departments.
Conducted seminars for Baltimore County Physical Educators. Developed
the Baltimore County curriculum for the Fitness Foundations and the Fitness
Mastery courses. Pioneered the use of Polar Heartrate Technology. She
will be presenting on Incorporating Fitness Information and Strategies
into your Physical Education Programs.
At Second Base for the IAHPERD Team is Shelley
Paul Smith – From
the Rockwood Gifted Program in St. Louis, MO. Shelley is the 2002 NASPE
Elementary Physical Education teacher of the Year for Central District
and the 2001 Missouri Teacher of the Year. She focuses on the design
and implementation of a physical education curriculum, Bodies and Brains
in Motion, specifically differentiated for gifted children that integrates
classroom concepts and skills in the gymnasium. The curriculum is unique
in its kinesthetic application of strategies identified as best practices
in both physical education and gifted education. The Bodies and Brains
in Motion program was named a “best practice” in the state
of Missouri in 1998. She has published articles in “Teaching Elementary
Physical Education” and “Gifted Child Today” and had
completed a manuscript for a book, Bodies and Brains in Motion: Designing
Creative Kinesthetic Curriculum. She enjoys teaching a graduate level
education course in curriculum and design at Webster University in St.
Louis. She will do two sessions on incorporating critical thinking and
character education in collaborative physical challenges and she will
incorporate differentiation strategies in innovative ways in the gymnasium.
They will teach you how to teach creatively and how to meet children’s
varying needs and abilities.
At Third Base for the IAHPERD Team is Tim McCord – From Titusville,
PA. Slippery Rock University Graduate, Tim McCord, chair of health, physical
education department at Titusville Area School District, has become a
nationally recognized supporter and spokesman for a wellness-based curriculum
known as the “New P.E.”. McCord has been quoted in Newsweek,
Time, U.S. News & World Report, Ladies Home Journal, the Pittsburg
Post-Gazette and the Plain Dealer (Cleveland). The “New P.E.” focuses
on total wellness and developing lifelong health habits. McCord was impressed
with what the P.E.4life Institute in Naperville, IL was doing and used
it as a basis for developing a P.E.4life program, resulting in daily
physical education classes for all high school students. Tim will be
speaking about his program in Titusville and will teach you about advocacy
tips in physical education.
At Short Stop for the IAHPERD Team is Beth Kirkpatrick -- Beth is the
2002 Distinguished Leadership Award Recipient from NASPE. She has been
recognized in LIFE Magazine, Newsweek, “Tom Brokaw’s Nightly
News”, and CNN. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s book “Arnold’s
Fitness for Kids” called her program “what is widely thought
of as the foremost middle school physical education program in the United
States.” Beth was the first physical educator to receive the United
States Department of Education’s Christa McAuliffe Fellowship which
was awarded to her in 1988. She has won numerous awards including Teacher
of the Year Award for NASPE. She is the current director of Education
and the National spokesperson for Polar Electro Inc. Beth has keynoted
over 40 state AHPERD conventions, the European AAHPERD, the ICHPERD-SD
conference in Malaysia, and over 600 other conferences, conventions and
workshops throughout the world! Beth will present the latest technology
information featuring the new E600 computer program made to help educators
simplify downloading information in their PE classrooms.
At Left Field for the IAHPERD Team is Dr. Janice
Clark Young – Associate
Professor in the department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation
at Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, MO and formally from Iowa.
Doctor of Education in Health Education from Lawrence, KS and MS Degree
in Physical Education from Iowa State University. She has done 15 National
Presentation, 4 District Presentations, 17 State Presentations, and 9
Local Presentations. She is an outstanding professor (I know…she
was my professor at Iowa State University) and will present two sessions
on Health Topics.
At Center Field for the IAHPERD Team is Frank
Young – (Janice’s
Husband) from Springfield, IL. Frank has his BA degree from William Penn
College and a Masters of Arts degree from Brigham Young University in
Performing Ballroom Dance. He has taught art and health to grades 5-12
in Iowa and Arizona. At the college level he taught ballroom dance, jazz,
methods of dance, aerobics, lifeguarding, and aquatics and golf at Iowa
State University. He taught group and private dance lessons since 1975,
and currently operates the 910 Ballroom in Springfield, Missouri. He
will do two dance sessions for us.
At Right Field for the IAHPERD Team is Ron Ramspott – From the
Rockwood School District in St. Louis, MO. Ron will be presenting two
presentations: “Rolling out the Brains – Getting kids to
think on their feet!” – games that integrate other subject
areas -- and “Building Healthy Hearts” -- Games and activities
that help teach heart healthy habits.
One of our Designated Hitters will be Dr. Daniel
Gerdes – He lives
in Missouri and is the Interim Director at CMSU Wellness Academy and
an Associate Professor in the Health and Human Performances Department.
Formerly from Iowa, Dan will present Lessons in Leadership: Coaching
wisdom from personal interviews with John Wooden, Dean Smith, Roy Williams,
Mike Krzyzewski and Denny Crum. Participants will gain applied leadership
and coaching insights based on extensive personal interviews. The nature
of the content could be readily applied to coaching, administrative,
teaching, or classroom settings as it deals with character building,
motivation, and the pursuit of excellence. He just recently released
a book entitled, Coaching for Character. The book has been endorsed by
the likes of Tom Osborne, Roy Williams, and local favorite, Dan Gable.
In addition, Dan has leadership and mental excellence work with Whiteman
AFB, home of the B-2 Stealth bomber, met with leadership cadres at West
Point and Command General Staff College in Leavenworth Kansas.
Another one of our Designated Hitters will be Roger
Washburn from Speed
Stacks – From Colorado…they will be here to present three
sessions on the cup stacking activities plus they will have an exhibit
booth. See how you can enhance coordination, ambidexterity and hand-eye
coordination with your students using speed stacks.
Another one of our Designated Hitters will be Vickie
Trent and Lois Boeyink – Vickie
is from the University of Northern Iowa and Lois is from Newton, IA.
They will be giving you valuable information about the National Board
for Professional Teaching Standards. Helpful hints to help you get certified.
